Ad. 1) Peter Bang would take the minutes

Ad. 2) Agenda was adopted

Ad. 3) The minutes of last meeting were approved.

Ad. 4) The new science officer, Julia Stamm presented herself to the MC; budget status. The action was on target. A total frame of € 86,000 had been granted the action.

Ad. 5)

- Rome training school (€ 600 stipends for 18 participants    € 12,000
  and 1200 for organisation etc.)

Ad. 6)

1 STSM completed so far this year by Natalia
2 STSMs approved for the remainder of the action: Karsten Johanning (Copenhagen, to visit St Andrews) and Dariusz Kolodzjiek (Warsaw-Copenhagen).

- Training school was ready to accept applications. First priority would be given to graduate students recommended by members of the network. Remaining slots would be advertised in various contexts. Deadline for recommendation, sent by MC members to Metin Kunt, was 1 December 2008.

Programme with Peter Bang, Ebba Koch, Claire Sotinel, Metin Kunt and Adam Ziolkowsky, Tuesday-Thursday leading up to the concluding conference.


Ad. 7)

First publication of the network edited by Giovanni Salmeri and Björn Forsén
Jeroen Duindam and Metin Kunt were close to completion of the editing of the Court Volume
Peter Bang and Christopher Bayly were close to completion of the editing of the Empires in Contention volume.
Peter Bang and Driusz Kolodzjiek were expecting to finish the editing of the Universal Empire volume by summer 2009.

Surayia Faroqhi and Adam Ziolkowski were making good progress with the militarism volume.


Ad. 8)

The empire and law meeting was discussed, and it was decided that Jeroen Duindam would go on to collect the papers with a view to publication.

Ad. 11)

The web-site had now begun to announce related conferences organised outside the network and new publications in the field (information from MC members about both types of news were very welcome)

Ad. 12)

As part of the dissemination Julia Stamm was asked to compile a list of guests that COST would like to invite to the final meeting. Further, members of the Schools and Academies in Rome were to be invited to the concluding meeting.

- Peter Bang informed about the Hera meeting, 9-10 October 2008, were Antonios Anastasopoulos and he had represented the action.

Ad. 13)


An update on the programme was provided for the Rome conference. The possibility of some financial support to enable low budget meetings to take place between author pairs in preparation for the Rome conference was raised. The mc approved to reserve a modest sum for such meetings, app. € 1,000-2,000, if possible to be organised as STSM’s or else a special meetings.
